What if every day was a struggle for survival? Many people live in fear that they will not survive the winter. Feyre Archeron is one of those people, but she refuses to show it. She lives with her father, who is physically disabled, and her sisters, Nesta and Elain. Feyre takes great risks in order for her family to survive. She hunts in the forest where she is viewed as prey but is, in fact, a lethal hunter. To everyone in her village, she is unimportant, even to her own family. The fact that she almost dies for them, every day, doesn’t even resonate through their thick skulls. She slaves away all day for them and what do they do? If Feyre brings in money from a long days hunt her sisters are always there, ready for a chance to snatch it up and use it for useless items such as jewelry. One day Feyre comes across a deer who she wishes to kill for its size will surely bring many meals to her family’s bellies. Suddenly she sees a wolf, actually a giant of a wolf. This gets her thinking, How will I kill it before it gets the deer? And also, Can that really be a wolf?
I absolutely adore this incredible start to this amazing book series. I had no clue what turn this story would take when I dove in. To be honest I haven’t surfaced from this story yet, three books later and I still want more. I went into this series with very low expectations despite what I had read or heard online. My initial surprise after finishing this first book was shocking. I originally possessed the mindset that this would merely be a Beauty and The Beast, retelling.
Despite a few masked similarities, this story is entirely of its own accord. The real reason I had been so surprised was because before I had read this, I had surprisingly never heard of the magnificent author, Sarah J. Maas. Unaware that she, in fact, had another series ahead of this one which, now that I have visited it, I know that it is just as incredible as the later series. After reading, A Court of Thorns and Roses, I can say that the hype is real and I have yet to find anything to read as masterfully accomplished.
